5 March 2008
Professor John McMillan has today been reappointed Commonwealth Ombudsman for a further five year term commencing 17 March 2008.
Professor McMillan has provided quality leadership as Ombudsman over the past five years – a time of significant expansion in the responsibilities of his office.
This included the new role of Immigration Ombudsman with reporting responsibilities on long term immigration detainees, plus oversight extended to Commonwealth contracted service providers.
Over the five years there has also been an increased compliance auditing role relating to the records of agencies such as the Australian Crime Commission and the Australian Federal Police to ensure compliance with legislative requirements applying to selected law enforcement and regulatory activities.
Prior to his initial appointment in 2003, Professor McMillan was a distinguished academic with extensive knowledge and experience in administrative law.
He was the Alumni Professor of Administrative Law at the Australian National University and was a founding member of the Australian Institute of Administrative Law.
I am confident that the office of Commonwealth Ombudsman will continue to benefit from Professor McMillan’s substantial skills and experience.
