Inaugural Privacy Awards Launched

The Rudd Labor Government is serious about protecting Australians’ privacy rights, and I am delighted to launch the new Privacy Awards sponsored by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.

Those who have gone ‘above and beyond’ in privacy matters will be recognised in the inaugural awards program and with the Australian Privacy Medal.

The most effective protection of Australians’ privacy is in the day-to-day decisions and actions of both public and private institutions and organisations.

The awards demonstrate the Office’s strong commitment to educating the community about privacy matters.

Over the past 20 years of the Privacy Act there have been many individuals, businesses and community groups who have made substantial contributions to the role of privacy in Australia.  These awards will provide the chance to recognise these achievements.

The Awards are in four categories:

As well as the awards, a new Australian Privacy Medal will be presented to an individual who has highlighted and advanced the privacy protection of their fellow citizens.

Nomination deadline to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for the Awards and Medal is 9 July 2008. The winners will be announced at a gala dinner on 27 August 2008. Details can be found at www.privacy.gov.au.
