Hope Royal Commission - Archive Release

Cabinet Secretary, Senator John Faulkner, today welcomed the National Archives’ public release of records from the Hope Royal Commission on Intelligence and Security.

The Hope Royal Commission was established by the Whitlam Government in 1974, following concerns about the structure and accountability of intelligence and security agencies of the period.

Mr Justice Hope addressed these issues and his recommendations led to the creation of Australia’s modern intelligence and security agencies, with their accountable structures and legislative base.

As the Minister responsible for the National Archives of Australia, Senator Faulkner acknowledged the co-operative effort of the Archives with the Australian Intelligence Community, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Department of Defence and the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet in enabling this latest release of official records.

“This action highlights the National Archives’ key role within Australia’s democratic system,” he said.

“By preserving and making available the evidence of government actions, the Archives helps ensure transparency and accountability.”

Many of the records released were created in secret hearings and have been safeguarded and unavailable to the public for the last 30 years.
