23/2009 30 June 2009
I am pleased to announce the reappointment of Karen Curtis as the Privacy Commissioner.
Ms Curtis was initially appointed as Privacy Commissioner for five years in mid 2004 and will continue in the role for a period of 12 months.
Ms Curtis’ contribution to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner is highly regarded within Government.
I look forward to working with her in promoting and protecting the personal information of all Australians.
Over the next 12 months, Ms Curtis will assist with the transition of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner to a new statutory agency, the Office of the Information Commissioner, within the Prime Minister and Cabinet portfolio.
The establishment of the new agency is a key element of the Government’s Freedom of Information reforms.
It will provide for an independent agency to handle complaints, oversight, advice and reporting of freedom of information and privacy matters.
The Office of the Information Commissioner will support two new statutory office holders, the Information Commissioner and the Freedom of Information Commissioner.
It is proposed the new agency will commence operations in early 2010.
Ms Curtis’ reappointment commences on 12 July 2009.
