Retirement of Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security

Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security, Ian Carnell, has announced his retirement after a long and successful career in various senior positions of the public service.

“Ian should be commended for the dedication and commitment he has displayed as the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security for the past six years,” Cabinet Secretary, Senator Joe Ludwig, said.

“I extend my sincere thanks to Ian who has led the IGIS through a very challenging time post September 11.”

“Over the past decade, the role of the IGIS has been imperative as Australia’s intelligence and security agencies increased their efforts against global terrorism.”

“Ian’s contribution as the IGIS has been instrumental to instilling public confidence in these agencies, and he is to be commended for his leadership and direction.”

“I wish Ian and his family every success in the future.”

“I would like to welcome Deputy Commonwealth Ombudsman, Dr Vivienne Thom, who will temporarily replace Ian as Acting Inspector-General of Intelligence and security.”

“Vivienne is highly qualified with a broad range of experience in the area of oversight of law enforcement, and I look forward to working with her.”

Mr Carnell was appointed Inspector-General in 2004. He has broad-ranging experience in public administration, including oversight of fraud investigation units and fraud control frameworks, policy development, and program administration.

He was also the Deputy Secretary of the Attorney General’s Department, responsible for national security and criminal justice issues.

The IGIS post has been advertised and will be filled according to the Government’s merit based selection process.
