Australia is now in a worldwide “league of its own” with world-leading technology and massive production of LNG, West Australian Federal Minister Gary Gray said today.
He was commenting on today’s announcement by Chevron Australia that it will begin construction immediately on the $29 billion Chevron-operated Wheatstone Project at Ashburton North, 12 kilometres west of Onslow.
Mr Gray, a former LNG industry executive, said, “Australia will have world-leading technology at Prelude with a planned floating platform for LNG production off the North West coast, world-first plans with the conversion of coal seam gas to LNG in Queensland, the largest commercial geosequestration project in the world at Gorgon and now, to top the cake, the Wheatstone project comprising of two LNG processing trains with a combined capacity of 8.9 million tonnes per annum.”
“For me this is a tremendously exciting day – when Australia leads the world toward a new clean energy future.
“I welcome this as a West Australian and especially as it will bring work to the Kwinana strip in my electorate.”
Mr Gray said tens of millions of tonnes of liquefied natural gas would be supplied by Australian producers from places as diverse as Queensland, Darwin and Western Australia – which had the North West Shelf, Gorgon and Wheatstone projects.
