The Hon Gary Gray AO MP
Special Minister of State

Media Release

GG 59/11
27 October 2011

CPSU/Customs wage negotiations

A spokesman for the Special Minister of State, Gary Gray, said the agreement between the CPSU and Australian Customs and Border Protection Service provided a total nine per cent average pay increase, not 11 per cent, over nearly three years.

“The Government’s bargaining framework, which has already resulted in 56 agreements, allows for a mix of pay rises and productivity improvements – but the ultimate outcome is that the total cost to the government and taxpayer is an average of three per cent per year or a total 9 per cent over three years,” the spokesman said.

The draft agreement with the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service allowed automatic increases of 4, 2 and 2 per cent per year, for a total of 8 per cent. Above that, were productivity bonuses.

Some staff, who were able to demonstrate productivity improvements, would receive pay rises of up to 10.2 per cent.

However, the average of these figures aligned with the 9 per cent total allowed under the Australian Public Service Bargaining Framework.
