The Hon Gary Gray AO MP
Special Minister of State and Minister for the Public Service and Integrity

Media Release

GG 34/12
16 May 2012

Minister acts on AEC advice following FWA report

Special Minister of State Gary Gray today immediately released advice he had received from the independent Australian Electoral Commission on the Fair Work Australia report released by the Senate on May 7.

On May 8 Mr Gray requested advice on whether the report raised any issues concerning compliance with the provisions of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918.  This full analysis has now been publicly released by the AEC on its website.

The Minister also sought advice on whether the FWA report raised any issues concerning the operation of the Electoral Act that should be considered by the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters (JSCEM) for possible remedy.

With respect to the second matter, the AEC has now advised the Minister on a list of matters that could be further considered by the Government.

Mr Gray said today, “The commission’s letter to me contains some valuable recommendations on amendments to the disclosure provisions of the Electoral Act, which I have referred along with all of the others to the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters.

“I also note that the AEC has not identified any breaches of the Electoral Act by Craig Thomson.”
