The Government will take all reasonable steps to ensure every eligible voter is able to vote without impediment at the September 2013 federal election, Special Minister of State Gary Gray said today.
“The election to be held on Saturday, September 14 will coincide with the High Holy Day of Yom Kippur, observed throughout the Jewish community,” he said.
“All Australian state and federal elections are held on Saturday, which is the Jewish Sabbath.
“The Australian Electoral Commission has well established procedures, including pre-poll and postal voting, to ensure all voters can vote in federal elections.
“The early announcement of the election dates means all Australians have more than seven months – rather than the usual five weeks – to prepare to cast their ballot.”
Today, the AEC urged all Australians to check that their address details were up-to-date on the electoral roll by going to the AEC
website or calling 13 23 26.
